Conservation

Barn Farm is a small section of unpolluted rich meadowland.  We would like to keep it that way.  This list will be updated in future.

  • No use of pesticides.
  • Nearly all wood preservatives are low impact (rather than a powerfull substance that lingers and will poison everything).
  • Use of predators (ie chicken) to keep populations of pests low.
  • Strengthening the hedge lines, to provide a better range of habitat.
  • Planting of native species, to encourage biodiverstity.
  • Little use of power tools/ high tech solutions that invariably pollute at some point in the development.
  • Applying for organic status, but this is a long process. Some issues we find unacceptable our priority is the health of the Livestock and would like to challenge some of the Organic theory!
  • Breeding/ maintaining unusual breeds, rather than corporate ‘cash cows’.
  • Recycling rain off Barn Farm roof. Other water containers now inplace.
  • Various wood recycling – particularly pallets – into gates, animal toys etc.
  • Reedbed now mature. 3 years has shown us that the Eco.value is very good.
  • As much food as possible for Livestock is purchased from Hampshire Farmers.
  • Hay and straw is purchased from a local farms.
